Shadow and light are my prime concerns when painting still life. It's what brings the painting to life. I had just completed a basket making workshop and I took my basket outside in the sunshine, with a few lemons inside it. When I saw the lace-like shadow created by the basket, I knew instantly I had to paint it. I rethought the items in the basket and combined lemons and limes for contrast. The shadow is is still my favourite aspect.
